Protect you from sun exposure easily

Sun exposure damages your skin a lot. So it’s important to do the protection all year round, not just during the summer or at the beach. Ultraviolet (UV) rays can reach you on cloudy and hazy days, as well as bright and sunny days. UV rays also reflect off of surfaces like water, cement, sand, and snow. 

Easy options for sun protection
Use sunscreen with sun protective factor (SPF) 15 or higher, and both UVA and UVB protection.
Wear clothing to protect exposed skin.
Wear a hat with a wide brim to shade the face, head, ears, and neck.
Wear sunglasses that wrap around and block as close to 100% of both UVA and UVB rays as possible.
Seek shade, especially during midday hours.

Clothing
Loose-fitting long-sleeved shirts and long pants made from tightly woven fabric offer the best protection from the sun’s UV rays. A wet T-shirt offers much less UV protection than a dry one. Darker colors may offer more protection than lighter colors. 

If wearing this type of clothing isn’t practical, at least try to wear a T-shirt or a beach cover-up. Keep in mind that a typical T-shirt has an SPF rating lower than 15, so use other types of protection as well. 

Hats
For the most protection, wear a hat with a brim all the way around that shades your face, ears, and the back of your neck. A tightly woven fabric, such as canvas, works best to protect your skin from UV rays. Avoid straw hats with holes that let sunlight through. A darker hat may offer more UV protection. If you wear a baseball cap, you should also protect your ears and the back of your neck by wearing clothing that covers those areas, using sunscreen with at least SPF 15, or by staying in the shade. 

Sunglasses
Sunglasses protect your eyes from UV rays and reduce the risk of cataracts. They also protect the tender skin around your eyes from sun exposure. Sunglasses that block both UVA and UVB rays offer the best protection. Most sunglasses sold in the United States, regardless of cost, meet this standard. Wrap-around sunglasses work best because they block UV rays from sneaking in from the side.

Everyday our face is bombarded with free radicals (pollution), exposed to UVA and UVB rays, and extreme weather conditions. Applying moisturizer before you start your day not only moisturizes as the name implies but it also protects your skin.

We all know that we need to moisturize and protect our skin everyday, but the hard part is finding the right moisturizer that works for you. There are numerous questions that need to be addressed when selecting your moisturizer. Some of these questions are: Do I need a lotion or a cream? What ingredients should I avoid if I have sensitive skin? My skin is already oily; won’t a moisturizer make my skin oilier? With so many questions and so many products to choose from selecting the right moisturizer can be frustrating.

Below are some tips to help you select the right moisturizer for your facial skin type.

Do I need a lotion or a cream? Dry skin is usually best hydrated with a cream rich in emollients. These usually come in the form of creams.  For daytime wear your moisturizer should have a SPF of at least 15 even during the winter months.  For nighttime go with an emollient rich cream and stay clear of harsh cleansers.  Oily skin is best served with a light gel or lotion.  Again, for daytime it should include an SPF too.

What ingredients should I avoid if I have sensitive skin? For those with sensitive skin, the most common skin irritants are fragrances, dyes, lanolin, and the preservatives parabens and formaldehyde.  Consider doing a patch test prior to a full application on the face.  For those with sensitive skin even natural ingredients such as aloe, almond oil, etc.,  can cause allergic reactions or topical skin dermatitis.

My skin is already oily; won’t a moisturizer make my skin oilier? A moisturizer protects the skin and well as hydrate, because hydrated skin feels better. Think water content in the skin not oil.  Consider a light lotion or gel that is oil free is recommended. Select a product that is water-based and is labeled noncomedogenic.  If you are using products to dry up excess oil a moisturizer is needed to relieve dryness and flakiness. The more harsh products you use to dry up excess oil, the more oil your skin will produce. Think gentle when considering a skin treatment; a homemade skin care recipe such as an oatmeal mask or clay mask will do wonders to absorb oil.

Skin Care: Dry Skin

If staying indoors is unavoidable during these times, make sure to reapply sunscreen frequently and take indoor breaks every so often if you can.
One good tip in knowing when it is safer to be under the sun is when your shadow is longer than you are tall, but continue to wear sunscreen just to be safe.

Take note to apply more sunscreen with higher SPF when around reflective surfaces like ice, snow or water, since it intensifies the heat, as well as the ultraviolet radiation of the sun.

Some medications, like prescription acne treatments or birth control pills can increase a person’s sensitivity to the sun, so make sure to ask your doctor if you are taking any or both of these treatments, as well as increasing the SPF of the sunscreen to use when exposed to the sun.
If you want the glow of a tan, try to fake it with self-tanners or salon tanning treatments to avoid the risk of getting harmful ultraviolet radiation. Sun exposure, once upon a time, was considered to be a healthy benefit of any outdoor activity. And sunlight does have an important role to play in the efficient functioning of skin cells and the healthy growth of our bodies. UV Radiations of the Sun

Sunlight consists of a broad spectrum of high frequency ultraviolet rays – UVA and UVB radiation that penetrate through the skin surface and cause intrinsic damage within the skin cells. Visible signs of sun damage include tanning, development of freckles and sunburns. Apart from this, the UV radiations also cause intrinsic damage in the long run that results in development of wrinkles, fine lines, age spots, and sagging skin. Although the body’s defense system is able to repair the external damage, the internal damage builds up over the years and leads to premature aging and in severe cases is also known to cause skin cancer.

Protection against Sun Exposure

Sun protection is a lifelong process that begins at infancy and should be continued throughout life. Research states that we get about 80 per cent of the total lifetime sun exposure in the first 18 years of our lives. This is why it is important to protect the skin against sun exposure right from the childhood so that there are no aftereffects later in life.

Here are some tips to protect your skin against sunlight this summer.

Wear a Broad Spectrum Sunscreen

Sunlight consists of three types of rays – UVA, UVB and UVC, out of which the UVC rays are the most powerful and damaging. But fortunately, UVC rays are absorbed by the ozone layer and thus do not reach. However, our skin needs to be protected against the UVA and UVB rays of the sunlight. Therefore, wear a sunscreen that offers broad spectrum sunscreen protection and protects against the UVA as well as the UVB rays. Here are some tips to choosing an effective sunscreen.

The sunscreen should contain ingredients like titanium dioxide and zinc oxide that reflect off the UV rays of the sun.
Consider the SPF amount of the sunscreen. Use at least an SPF 30 sunscreen. The SPF of the sunscreen should be high enough to keep your skin protected against the sunlight for a long period of time. An SPF 30 sunscreen filters 96.7% of the UVB rays.

Consider the Sunscreen SPF

If your extend of exposure to sunlight is very limited like when you are running errands, walking to the car etc., then an SPF 15 sunscreen should be enough for you. However, if you need to spend longer amounts of time in the sunlight like when you are exercising, mowing the lawn or playing, then you would need at least an SPF 30 sunscreen. Moreover, if you have extremely fair skin then you should consider using an SPF 50 sunscreen that offers about 99 per cent sun protection. This is because fair skinned people lack melanin and are highly sensitized to the sun rays. An SPF 50 sunscreen is also recommended for people who are taking medications that increase the skin’s susceptibility to sunburns or have a medical history of skin cancer in the family.

Expiration Dates of Sunscreens

First of all, don’t use sunscreens (or any skin care product) that is past their expiration dates. Check your sunscreen bottle or tube for its expiry period and immediately throw them away if they are past their prime. If there is no expiration period mentioned, then it is advisable to dispose of sunscreens after a year. Also, make sure you store your sunscreen in a cool dark place so that they don’t lose their efficiency and last longer.

Use Enough Amount of Sunscreens

One of the most common mistakes people make while using sunscreens that render them ineffective is that they don’t use enough. Ideally, take an ounce of the sunscreen, about the amount of a shot glass and slather it all over the exposed areas of your body. Remember, if you are not applying a thick layer, it would not protect the skin against sunlight. Also, make sure you reapply after every 2 hours, especially if you are swimming or have been sweating a lot. Look for water proof or water-resistant sunscreens. Waterproof sunscreens guarantee 80 minutes of protection while water-resistant sunscreens provide only 40 minutes of protection.

But while everyone wants a glowing tan, the sun can also seriously damage your skin if you don’t take precautions. Here’s some simple guidelines for capturing that perfect tan and not frying your skin.

- The most important factor when picking a sunscreen is to get one that has an SPF of 15 or higher and broad-spectrum protection. This means your skin will be protected from both UVA and UVB rays.
- Chemical-free physical sunblocks that contain ingredients like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide reflect harmful rays without reacting with the skin. This means they don’t cause allergic reactions and don’t sting the eyes if they run due to swimming or sweating.

- Regularly exfoliating your skin removes the outer layer of dead cells and allows you to achieve a more even tan. However, this also causes your skin to burn more easily, so don’t scrub yourself right before tanning.

- Lips can chap as easily from sunburn as from exposure to cold and dry air, so make sure to use a lip protection with an SPF of 15 or higher.

- Sunscreen should be applied 20 minutes before you go out into the sun to allow the skin time to absorb it. After a half an hour outside, it should be applied again for maximum protection. Most sunscreens only last about two hours, so make sure to apply it regularly, especially if swimming or sweating heavily. Even “waterproof” brands lose their potency after an hour in the water.

- Sand and water can reflect up to 90% of the sun’s rays, so give your skin extra protection when at the beach. A stronger SPF is also recommended for higher altitudes, since the air is thinner and sun exposure more intense.

- Don’t forget to apply sunscreen to sensitive areas like the tops of your feet, backs of your ears and neck, and areas of the scalp and hairline if your hair is thin or thinning.

Bathing is very necessary at least twice each day during summer, protect skin in summer with benefit from the coolness of water soothing the sweat glands, you will also be able to wash the grime off during summer. Make sure you do not take a bath immediately after you came indoors from being under sun for long. Your skin will benefit if you wait for sometime before entering the shower, taking a bath immediately after coming from direct sun tends to dry skin, rather than do it any good, a 10 minute wait would be beneficial.
